Clare.AI managed to capture second place at Citibank’s 2017 Fintech Challenge. The competition had over 200 submissions before featuring the chosen 14 finalists during demo day on June 22nd at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The all day event featured several high profile keynote speakers such as Alipay General Manager Venetia Lee and Legislative Councillor Charles Mok, as well as hundreds of attendees in the form of investors, corporate clients, and fintech enthusiasts.
In April, Citi became the first Hong Kong bank to open its APIs to the developer community. With the Fintech Challenge competition and newly opened APIs, Citi hoped to help fuel Hong Kong’s growing Fintech innovation and development.
On demo day, each finalist team was expected to give a presentation for 8 minutes, including a demo of the product, followed by a five-minute Q&A with the judges and the audience. These presentations were spread out throughout the day and were interspersed with speeches and coffee breaks, during which judges and attendees could approach companies at their booths.
The following was the judging criteria for the presentation:
Clare.AI was chosen to present first on the day. Our two co-founders, Bianca and Ken, stood on stage and presented to the audience and a large panel of judges including Citi Fintech CEO, Yolande Piazza.

During coffee breaks, there were refreshments and snacks served while the Clare.AI team manned the booth and talked to interested audience members and judges. These breaks also presented us the opportunity to learn about the other incredible Fintech challenge finalists.
The event concluded at 5pm where Angel Ng, Country Business Manager of Citibank Hong Kong, gave a closing ceremony speech. The awards were then announced with Clare.AI finishing in second place and winning a cash prize of $200,000 HKD. The day was long, but also exciting and rewarding. We are proud of the results and excited for future competitions and opportunities that await us.
